PRESS RELEASE
‘Women at Large’ brings together multidisciplinary, multigenerational, Miami-based women artists from diverse origins at different career points. This exhibition is the third iteration of ‘Women at Large,’ which started by providing ample space for a group of women artists to present large-scale works. The artists are encouraged to take as much space as possible with their creations and present new experimental work or previous significant work they want to show in a different configuration.
As with the previous iterations, this iteration’s selection of artists and their work is not guided by a set theme or formalisms. Instead, the curator’s enthusiasm for working with artists whose creations spark interest and curiosity guides the selection process. She has been closely following the work of these artists for some time as part of her role in promoting the Miami and South Florida art scene and keeping our community informed through the ArtSeen365 platform.
The selected artists share a desire to challenge outdated notions that women are not naturally good at building things, working on a large scale, or using hard- to-manage, unconventional materials. Most participating artists have created new works for this exhibition, and while not all works are site-specific, all artists consider the space hosting them. All presentations have a sculptural, tri-dimensional aspect; many are installations, and some play close to the ‘art installation’ lines by combining two-dimensional and sculptural works in response to their surroundings.
Inspired by notable exhibitions that combine large works by multiple artists while providing each with distinctive ample space and not conforming to any theme, this exhibition aims to do the same for the selected nine Miami-based women artists. They all deserve the audience’s consideration for their efforts to continue stretching their practices, each in their own way, at their own pace, and from their own place.
Exhibiting Artists include Nathalie Alfonso, Carolina Cueva, Carol Jazzar, Charo Oquet, Luna Palazzolo-Daboul, Chire Regans, Maria Theresa Barbist, Carol Todaro, Denise Treizman.
