This show takes the missions of two esteemed New York City art institutions, El Museo del Barrio and the School of Visual Arts, and brings them together for an exhibition that surveys the production of Latino graduates of the MFA program at SVA. Founded in the late 1940s as the Cartoonists and Illustrators School, SVA began to confer the Master of Fine Arts degree in 1983. Created in 1969 as the first museum dedicated to the art and culture of Puerto Ricans, El Museo del Barrio was founded by the artist Raphael Montañez Ortiz with activists, parents and teachers in East Harlem. As an artist, Montañez Ortiz understood the importance of art in the educational life of a student. This exhibition serves as a small survey of the work done by graduates of the MFA program at SVA, artists who would be equally at home in the galleries of El Museo del Barrio. At various stages of their careers, the artists in the show act as contemporary anthropologists gathering objects or inspiration from the urban landscape, engaging with issues around migration and the body, exploring space and architecture, tradition and craft. El Museo del Barrio is honored to partner with the School of Visual Arts on this exhibition.
